“Avengers” member Spider-Man has departed the Marvel Cinematic Universe because Disney and Sony failed to agree on the terms regarding the continuation of Tom Holland’s character in the franchise. Fans have expressed anger, surprise, and even amusement over the news. Meanwhile, Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner gave his two cents on the issue.

The actor made his idea known to Sony by voicing on social media that the webhead deserves to return to Marvel Studios and his creator, the late comic book producer Stan Lee, who passed away this year. He posted this on both Twitter and Instagram, where he implored to Sony to bring back the character, according to Independent UK.

Sony Pictures and Disney failed to agree on a request that the latter should receive fifty-fifty of all future box office takings in the case of future “Spider-Man” films. The breakdown in negotiations also meant that Marvel President Kevin Feige will no longer produce any future standalone films featuring the resident web-crawler of the Avengers team.

Two more films about Spider-Man are already in the works, with Holland set to reprise his role as the web-crawler. Both of them are also going to be directed by Jon Watts, but these will now be under Sony Pictures as opposed to having it co-produced by Marvel. As for the fate of the rest of the cast —namely Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, and Jacob — it remains to be seen whether they will also be coming back.

When some netizens asked Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds about his opinion on the current Spider-Man situation and whether there will be a “Spiderman and Deadpool” movie, the actor said that there will be one, but it can only be seen “in (his) heart,” as per USA Today.

A statement released by Sony said that the news about Spider-Man “mischaracterized” the discussions that they had with Marvel’s Feige. The company went on to explain the disappointment of the studio in the situation, but they respect Disney’s decision to have Feige beg off from continuing to produce any other live-action “Spider-Man” films under the studio.
