In a bizarre incident, a premature baby declared stillborn by doctors was found alive while authorities were preparing for the burial.

The incident took place in Brazil's northern state of Rondonia last week. The unidentified 18-year-old mother, who was unaware of the pregnancy, visited a hospital twice after suffering severe stomach pain. On both occasions, the doctors did not notice that she was pregnant and sent her back home after prescribing some medicines, Asianet News reported.

The woman once again complained of severe pain after returning home the second time and delivered the baby without any medical help. She then took the child to the hospital. Doctors told her the infant was born in the seventh month of pregnancy and declared the baby a stillborn. The mother was asked to be under observation at the hospital.

The hospital authorities issued a death certificate and handed over the body to an officer to prepare for the funeral. While carrying out the procedures, the officer noticed that the baby sighed and the heart was beating. The man rushed the infant to the hospital, Yahoo News reported.

The newborn was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for treatment. The baby, who has been named Augusta, is still in the hospital but is responding well to treatment, doctors said. The mother has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.

In a similar incident in Mexico last year, a newborn baby declared dead by doctors was found alive in a morgue refrigerator six hours later. Doctors told the family that the premature baby had died and his body was stored in the freezer. When the funeral home employees arrived at the morgue to retrieve the body, they noticed the child was crying and moving. A video released by local media outlets showed the newborn wrapped in a blue sheet in his father's arms.
