The body of a baby was discovered by police in Washington, D.C., inside a plastic bag placed in a trash can in a medical facility's restroom Monday.
Officers of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to a report of an unconscious child in the 100 Block of Irving Street Northwest shortly before 8 a.m., WDVM reported, citing a police report. Police were directed to a unisex bathroom and found the infant stuffed inside a plastic bag in a trash can.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services medical director Dr. Robert Holman, who accompanied the responders, pronounced the infant dead at the scene.
The location was a physician's office building, the MPD said in a statement to WUSA.
Police are now investigating the death of the infant. No additional details were provided.
A similar incident happened on May 4 when authorities discovered the decomposed body of a newborn baby inside a plastic box that was abandoned in an alley in Malaysia. Police said the body was dumped behind an establishment in Jalan Kluang in the southern state of Johor.
An investigation found that the infant, which still had its umbilical cord intact, had been sitting there for more than 24 hours as the body was starting to decompose.
A review of surveillance footage in the area showed that a person authorities believed was a man left the box in the area on April 27.
The child's body was sent to a hospital to be examined.
New York authorities made a similar discovery last month when the decomposing body of a stabbing victim was found stuffed in a black plastic bag inside a Harlem apartment.
Authorities said the body of 37-year-old Daniel Simons was found at approximately 3 p.m. on April 23 inside a sixth-floor apartment on St. Nicholas Ave. near W. 149th St.
According to police, a health aid of the apartment's tenant attempted to clean the living room and found Simons' body wrapped in a plastic bag under a comforter.
