Baby Girl Found Alive Near Dead Bodies Of Mother, Grandmother In New York
A baby was found alive near the dead bodies of two adult women in a home in Rockland Country, New York, on Tuesday (May 26).
Officers responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting on Lake Road in Valley Cottage on Tuesday early morning. When they arrived at the scene, they found an infant girl with the bodies of two women a few feet away from her.
The baby appeared to be unharmed but was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure. She was later placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
According to the police, the two victims, identified as 27-year-old Kathleen Castor and 63-year-old Wanda Castor, were found dead with gunshot injuries. They were identified as the baby’s mother and grandmother.
The bodies of the victims were sent to Rockland County medical examiner's office. Police were treating the case as a double homicide.
Police said a car belonging to the 27-year-old victim was missing from the scene and it was later recovered. A man, described as a person of interest in the case, was identified and interrogated.
The man was reportedly cooperating with the officers. His identity was not revealed by the police and it was not clear if the man was related to the family members.
“A tragic day in Rockland County, town of Clarkstown, where an infant baby girl lost both her mother and grandmother,” said Tom Walsh, Rockland County District Attorney.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were unknown at the time. No arrests were made.
“Very surprised. I’m shocked. It’s a very peaceful community. I always keep my door open. I’ve been here for 13 years and nothing has happened,” said Serge Gleboff, a resident in the area.
“This is horrible because the baby is alive and is going to be an orphan,” said Marina Wells, another local resident.
The case was still under investigation. No further information was available.
Police requested anyone with information about the incident to immediately contact the Clarkstown Detective Bureau at (845)639-5800.
