Baggage Handler Steals Luggage Then Tries To Sell It On Facebook
An Oklahoma woman is distraught because some items from her luggage went missing. Kinley Rice of Sapulpa recently took a flight with American Airlines out of the Tulsa Airport. But when she got to her destination, she figured out that several pieces of clothing from her luggage had gone missing including the tag that shows her information.
To her surprise, most of her missing items began circulating on Facebook. She found out that someone was selling a jacket on Facebook Marketplace which was very similar to the one missing from her baggage. The seller didn't even bother to remove the bar code of the stolen jacket. Fortunately, Rice kept the receipt with the barcode to prove it was hers. During the comparison, she found out that it was definitely the same jacket!
Rice then did some investigating into the seller's Facebook account and found out that the individual is employed at the airport as a baggage handler. That was the same place where her luggage went missing. With her findings, Rice contacted the local police and filed a report. She contacted the airline who has promised her $1,000 to replace her missing items.
American Airlines told KJRH in a statement that "American is very concerned with these allegations. We are investigating this condition with Piedmont we are fully cooperating with the authorities." Piedmont Airlines is a regional carrier for American Airlines.
According to a July 2017 report by Forbes, luggage thefts are on the rise since the airport security has been tightened. In the wake of terrorist incidents, more people are putting their hands on our luggage and we can't always watch what they are doing with it.
The report states that in 2012, there were 200 thefts from checked baggage at New York's JFK airport daily. No wonder people don't want to check bags anymore. It's easier to keep them in the overhead bin and pack lightly.
