Former first lady Michelle Obama celebrated her 57th birthday on Sunday, and her loved ones shared heartfelt messages for her on social media to mark the special occasion.
Leading the birthday tributes wishes was her husband, former President Barack Obama, who shared a sweet throwback photo of his "best friend" and wrote about how much she means to him.
"Happy birthday to my love, my partner, and my best friend. Every moment with you is a blessing. Love you, Miche," Obama wrote on his official Instagram account.
The couple met in 1989 and started dating each other later that year. After two years of dating, Obama and Michelle got engaged on July 3, 1991. The pair exchanged vows on Oct. 3, 1992, and share two children together — Malia, 22, and Sasha, 19.
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris also paid tribute to Michelle on Twitter, sharing a photo of herself and the former first lady standing side-by-side. Harris wished Michelle a very happy birthday and expressed gratitude toward her for "empowering" the next generation of leaders.
Jill Biden, the wife of President-elect Joe Biden, also marked her friend's birthday on social media by sharing a sweet photo of herself and Michelle.
Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis called Michelle her "hero" and praised her "intelligence and courage."
"Happy, happiest of birthdays @MichelleObama! Thank you for your authenticity, beauty, courage, intelligence and loyalty. You're OUR hero, sis!! I hope to honor you and all you are in my portrayal of you! Love ya," Davis tweeted.
The former first lady thanked everyone for the heartwarming messages and urged everyone to take care of themselves amid the global pandemic.
"Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes! I know this past year has been difficult for us all on so many levels, so I just hope you all are taking care of yourselves and finding joy in the smallest moments," Michelle wrote on social media.
Born on Jan. 17, 1964, in Chicago, Michelle went to Harvard Law School to study law and later pursue a career as a lawyer. After graduating from law school in 1988, she worked as an associate in the Chicago branch of the firm Sidley Austin.
Michelle was at her husband's side when he delivered a high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and later become a national icon for her social work.
