When Barack Obama became the president and moved into the White House in 2009, his daughter Malia and Sasha were just 10 and seven-year-olds respectively. On Wednesday, Sasha celebrated her 19th birthday.

Although the sisters grew up in the public eye, there isn't much known about them. Since leaving the White House, the Obama sisters have largely stayed away from scandals and they seem content to lead quiet lives.

They lead an almost normal life, although a security detail is still part of their lives.

While Malia, now 21, began classes at Harvard University in 2017, Sasha is currently a student at the University of Michigan. They, however, returned home in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a video shared on Ellen DeGeneres Instagram page in March, former first lady Michelle revealed that Sasha and her older sister Malia were busy with their online classes.

"Everybody’s home," said Michelle. "The girls are back because colleges are now online, so they’re off in their respective rooms doing their online classes.”

Barack and Michelle are glad to have their girls back home. The former first lady said the pandemic has made them realize that they don’t need a lot of the stuff they have.

“When times are bad, having each other, having your health … we can do with a lot less, and I think that’s an important lesson that I want my kids to understand,” Michelle, author of the bestselling book “Becoming”, said. “Get out there in the world, be grateful for what you have, and be ready to share it when the time comes. That’s really what it’s all about.”

Michelle had earlier opened up about her girls to Meghan Markle, saying both Malia and Sasha, real name Natasha, couldn’t be more different from one another.

“One speaks freely and often, one opens up on her own terms,” Michelle told Markle in a 2019 interview for British Vogue. “One shares her innermost feelings, the other is content to let you figure it out."

Neither approach is better or worse, said Michelle, "because they’ve both grown into smart, compassionate, and independent young women, fully capable of paving their own paths.”
