  • Georginio Wijnaldum could be the odd man out if Thiago Alcantara joins Liverpool
  • Wijnaldum may be of better use to Barcelona once things get settled
  • The Reds are overloaded at midfield, putting Wijnaldum in a spot

Liverpool FC may not need major revamps, but that will not stop Jurgen Klopp from targeting several players, including Thiago Alcantara. Should the Reds take him in, there will be casualties. And one name that has been raised is Georginio Wijnaldum.

With the success that Liverpool has had this past season, it would be foolish to think that Klopp would want to alter his lineup. But if the addition of Alcantara can improve the midfield, such a move would make sense. But it can only happen at a cost, with some players possibly being let go.

Wijnaldum has been singled out as a potential casualty, although he is unlikely to be left idle. The 29-year-old is being linked to Barcelona, a club that is now undergoing a major revamp.

With the Reds' deep roster, the Dutch midfielder has been overlooked by many. Most overlook his performance for Liverpool and fail to see what he has contributed. He is one of the more important players under Klopp and has played more minutes than any other Liverpool player except for Roberto Firmino, Sky Sports reported.

Aside from that, Wijnaldum has found a way to stay healthy. In the last two seasons, he has missed only four games for the Reds. But his contribution to Liverpool may be hard to measure.

It is a given that his level play has dipped a bit since his time with Newcastle and early years at Anfield. His numbers have dropped and new faces in the fold could further push him down the pecking order. So is it time for him to move on?

Depending on what Ronald Koeman has in mind, there is a chance that the value of Wijnaldum could be felt more. Big names at Barca are either being let go or voluntarily moving out, a glimpse of how shaky things are now over at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi is the player that most are monitoring. The latest word out is that the Argentine has signed a ridiculous $1.13 billion deal to join Manchester City, according to British newspaper The Daily Record.

There are other players also being let go, particularly Luis Suarez. Barcelona is in a fragile state right now with nothing set in stone. But with the right cast, Wijnaldum could be of a better use for Barca if their midfield needs some tested players.
