Barcelona May Target Star Forward Whose Manchester United Deal Will Expire In 2023
KEY POINTS
- The presidential elections will take place in January in Barcelona
- Marcus Rashford is the product of Man Utd academy
- He has scored 12 goals in 21 games this season for Red Devils
FC Barcelona may reportedly make Manchester United star forward Marcus Rashford one of their top targets next summer. Barcelona’s presidential candidate Jordi Farre has admitted that among the current forwards in soccer, he likes Rashford “the most in the world” and would like to bring him to Camp Nou.
Rashford, who graduated from Manchester United’s academy and has been one of their best on the pitch, is yet to sign an extension as his current deal with the Red Devils is due to expire in 2023.
Farre has named Rashford as among the three forwards he would target at Barcelona should he become Barcelona’s next president. Following Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation in October, presidential elections at Camp Nou are scheduled to take place in January.
"We need a forward, I think we need a goalscorer and I think [Martin] Braithwaite needs a substitute or a better starter, right? I think Braithwaite can be a very good option, but he should be the fifth or sixth player in the Barça forward line,” Farre told 90min.
“Look, there is one that I’ve liked for a long time and yesterday he scored a great goal. I have not seen it but they have told me that it is spectacular that it is Raul de Tomas [of Espanyol]. I think he is a player who has many things to succeed - he has some injury problems and that - but I also like [Erling] Haaland, Raul de Tomas, Rashford - I also like him. I think there are very interesting players. Rashford is one of the footballers I like most in the world," Farre added in the same interview.
Rashford, who has netted 12 goals in 21 competitive appearances for Manchester United in the ongoing campaign, was recently asked if he sees himself playing for another club at some point in the future. To this, the 23-year-old replied, "For me, I never look beyond Manchester United. As a kid, I only had Manchester United in my mind and it wouldn't sit right with me pulling on another shirt. I just want to do the best I can for the club whilst I'm here, so long-term hopefully I'm here for the long-term."
Referring to that statement, former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal said he believes Rashford can leave Manchester United in the future as the young forward did not mention that he would "never play for another club".
