Barcelona News: Lionel Messi Doing ‘Well’ At His Club, Says Argentina Coach
KEY POINTS
- Lionel Messi requested for a transfer out of Barcelona earlier this year
- Messi opted to stay to avoid a legal dispute with his longtime club
- Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni is relieved that Messi resolved his issues with Barcelona
Lionel Messi’s decision to stay with Barcelona is perceived as a good move by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.
"I spoke to Leo when everything was resolved and I saw him calm," Scaloni said, Goal reported.
Months after Messi requested for a transfer, the 33-year-old Argentine player remains a member of Barcelona. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner earlier told Goal that the only chance he had of leaving was if he took the organization to court.
"And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million (£624m/$823m) clause and that this is impossible," Messi shared when he decided to stay with Barca.
But the Barcelona captain appears to have put all that behind him. Scaloni said he was relieved that Messi has sorted things out with his club.
"Since his arrival, we've been able to have a long chat. He is happy to be here. He's now well in his club," the 42-year-old manager shared. "All we wanted from a distance was for everything to be resolved and for him to play and to be fit."
"For us, it's positive that he stayed because he was able to play immediately, he knows the club, but in terms of decisions, we don't get involved in that, we don't step in the player's territory," Scaloni continued.
The bigger picture for Scaloni and Argentina is to have his top players in good condition so that they can take the team to further success.
"We want and wish to qualify for the World Cup for our country but also for other reasons, among them for Leo to play there," Scaloni said.
Throughout Messi’s career, he’s been in top physical form and has been the best scorer for Barcelona for almost two decades. In 734 appearances, the four-time Champions League winner has netted 635 goals and tallied 279 assists.
While their purpose of winning is great, Scaloni assured that Argentina will take it one step at a time in its matches against Ecuador on Friday and Bolivia on Wednesday.
