A Barcelona rising star could be all set for a stunning contract extension.
A massive roster overhaul is expected to happen at Barcelona for the entirety of the summer.
While a host of potential departures and signings is being linked to the Catalan club, Ilaix Moriba’s contract renewal could already be in the works.
Following Moriba’s successful maiden senior team season, Barcelona has begun working on the contract extension of the 18-year old, various sources from Spain reported, including Barcelona insider Reshad Rahman.
According to Rahman, “a meeting” between Barcelona and Moriba has been scheduled, and the club is hoping to prolong the attacking midfielder’s tenure.
Moriba is still tied up with Barca until 2022, but the reports stated that the La Liga giants are keen on securing the youngster’s future in the club by offering him a fresh set of terms.
This past season, Moriba impressed under Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman and became one of Lionel Messi’s newest co-stars.
In the process, the Barca debutant registered one goal and two assists to his name.
It didn’t take long for big-name European clubs to notice Moriba’s fine form. Atop from being dubbed as the “New Paul Pogba,” has also been constantly linked to Manchester United.
However, Moriba’s reported looming contract extension with Barcelona saw the Red Devils’ efforts put into waste, according to the La Vanguardia report obtained by Sport Witness.
Amid all the rumors swirling around, Moriba’s stance about the matter seemed unmoved.
According to Moriba, he has already envisioned himself staying at Barcelona for the rest of his career.
“I am living a dream and I hope it never ends,” Moriba said after Barcelona’s win over Getafe in April. “We depend on us and we have to go to all the games the same way.”
“There are good vibes in the [Barcelona] dressing room, that is reflected in the results you are seeing,” he continued.
Moriba’s thoughts are backed by his father Mamady, who had earlier admitted that he hopes his son could also follow in the footsteps of Messi at Barcelona.
“I hope Ilaix never leaves [Barcelona] and can be an example for the next generation at La Masia,” Mamady told Sport earlier this year. “I want kids who have doubts about staying to see Ilaix and choose to stay. It happened with [Lionel] Messi, [Andres] Iniesta, [Sergio] Busquets, Xavi [Hernandez], etc. I hope he can always stay at Barca.”
