  • Barcelona president Joan Laporta provides an update on Lionel Messi's contract extension
  • Laporta assures Sergio Aguero is convincing Messi to sign with Barca
  • Aguero is confident his friend will stay with Barca

Barcelona president may have already found a key figure who could help convince Lionel Messi to stay.

Messi’s Barcelona contract extension has been quite a saga for Laporta ever since he was appointed as club president.

Recently providing an update on the Argentine’s situation, Laporta revealed that though nothing is official yet, things have been going well thus far.

What’s even more interesting is that Laporta is certain new Barcelona signing and Messi’s longtime friend, Sergio Aguero, serves as a daily reminder for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner that he has to stay with the team.

"I would like to say that [Messi's contract renewal] is already done, but it is not like that,” Laporta told Marca. "The talks are going well, but it is not done. The idea is to reach an agreement as soon as possible. It is convenient for him and also for us because if we solve this matter others would be solved faster.”

"We are confident because he [Messi] wants to stay,” he added. “We are doing everything possible to offer him a competitive team. We have signed ‘Kun’ [Aguero] who reminds him every day at the Copa America that he has to sign so they can play together."

Despite the financial issues Barcelona is currently dealing with due to the pandemic, Laporta remains “optimistic” about sealing Messi’s contract renewal.

In fact, the Barca chief insisted he will not take “no” for an answer.

"We act with skill and ability to convince him [Messi]," the executive assured. "I am not contemplating [getting] a no [as an answer.”

"I am optimistic. He wants to stay and we do what we can. It is not easy. He is still the best in the world and is coveted by other clubs that have greater financial potential.”

Aguero, for his part, bared that he and Messi indeed “speak everyday.”

According to the former Manchester City striker, now that he and Messi are playing together for Argentina, it’s “easier” for him to convince his friend to stay with Barcelona.

"I speak [to Messi] everyday, in the last message he congratulated me,” Aguero said during his Barcelona transfer announcement presser. “We have known each other for a long time and for me playing now and training with him every day is going to be much easier."

"We hope to play together, of course,” he continued. “But we have been negotiating for a long time, these are decisions that Leo will make with the club. It will be a pleasure and pride to play together. I have known him for a long time and I think he will stay."
