Barcelona's Woes Continue As Star Striker Out For 3 Months
KEY POINTS
- Sergio Aguero suffered a cardiological issue Saturday
- He is set to receive treatment in the next three months
- Aguero is set to miss at least 15 matches
Sergio Aguero was ruled out for three months after suffering chest pains against Alaves, FC Barcelona announced Tuesday.
Aguero, who felt the discomfort in the first half of the game against Alaves that ended in a 1-1 draw Saturday, was eventually replaced by Philippe Coutinho.
Aguero was taken to the hospital after the match and he underwent cardiological tests. The striker will receive treatment in the coming months, while his health will be monitored, according to an official release from Barcelona.
"The first team player Sergio Aguero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada. He is unavailable for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process," Barcelona said in the release.
Aguero took to social media Tuesday to thank everyone for the support. He has ensured that he is in "good spirits" ahead of his recovery process.
"I am well and in good spirits to face the recovery process. I want to thank you all for so many messages of support and love that make my heart stronger today," wrote Aguero in a tweet.
Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling sent a message to his former teammate on social media. "Stay strong my brother, @aguerosergiokun, we're all with you. Get well soon," he wrote.
Aguero, who moved from Manchester City to Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, has made only five appearances for his new club in the 2021-22 campaign and has netted a goal. Against Alaves, Aguero was making only his second start of the season after suffering a pre-season injury.
Aguero missed as many as nine matches at the beginning of the campaign due to a calf issue. The former Atletico Madrid striker is set to miss 15 fixtures for Barcelona due to his cardiological issue.
Ahead of Barcelona's Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev, club's interim boss Sergi Barjuan said, "I talked to him and he's calm. He's confined to his room but, considering the situation, he's calm."
Barcelona are experiencing a tough transition phase as they are currently ninth in the 2021-22 La Liga table. The Catalans recently sacked their head coach Ronald Koeman. Due to a major financial crisis, they were forced to let go of star players such as Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann during the summer window.
