'Baywatch' Movie Starring Dwayne Johnson May Soon Be A Reality
Reports suggest that Seth Gordon is currently in talks with executives at Paramount to direct a “Baywatch” movie starring Dwayne Johnson. The movie is still in the early planning stages and no release date has been announced yet by the studio.
According to a report by Variety, Paramount is said to have been looking for a director like Gordon for the movie due to his success with R-rated comedy projects. The studio is said to be negotiating a deal to bring the director onboard the new project. Sources have reportedly confirmed that the upcoming movie will be taking a “comedic route.”
Gordon has directed the 2011 movie “Horrible Bosses” and TV shows like “The Goldbergs” and “Marry Me.” The studio is said to be negotiating with the director because there is a demand for R-rated comedies in the market.
A report by The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Gordon is in talks to direct “Baywatch.” The report notes that the project has been in development since 2004, and one of the main reasons the project has been held up is the studio wants to get the story and the tone of the movie right.
The movie is based on the popular TV series of the same title that aired from 1989 to 2001. According to the report, the studio is planning to replicate the success of the “21 Jump Street” movies that were able to successfully turn a TV series into a movie franchise.
The movie will be produced by Montecito Pictures. Beau Flynn, who is a producer of Johnson’s “Journey 3,” will also be a part of the upcoming movie, and the actor’s producing partner Dany Garcia is also said to be playing a role in the production. The executive producers of the movie are Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonnan, according to the report.
The main plot of the “Baywatch” movie is said to center on a “by-the-book and very serious lifeguard” to be played by Johnson. The lifeguard will be forced to join hands with “young rule-flouting hotheads” in order to take on an oil tycoon and save his beach from environmental destruction. Paramount is said to be planning to begin production of the movie by 2016.
