KEY POINTS

  • California-based Boyd Specialties recalled 1,634 pounds of jerky
  • This included at least 70 types of meaty snacks that were shipped across the country
  • People were advised to throw any dried beef made on Feb. 23 due to the bacteria

Dozens of beef jerky brands have been recalled in New Jersey and seven other states due to listeria contamination, the US Food and Drug Administration (USDA) said.

The contamination was found in routine sampling of some of the products. California-based Boyd Specialties recalled 1,634 pounds of jerky after federal inspectors discovered the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This included at least 70 types of meaty snacks that were shipped around the country — including Arrow’s Native Foods, Classy Cow Beef Jerky and Old South. Authorities pulled the stocks off the shelves after federal food safety agencies issued warnings.

People were advised to throw away any dried beef made on Feb. 23 due to the bacteria, which can cause fever, stomach problems and convulsions, and also poses an increased threat to pregnant women, unborn children and the elderly, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in its cautionary announcement.

Sometimes the first signs are diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, the USDA said in the notice Friday.

The products were made in Colton, California, and sold in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. The products were manufactured on Feb. 23, 2022, and bear the establishment number “EST. 40269″ inside the USDA mark of inspection, the USDA said.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ pantries,” the USDA’s recall notice stated. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

“Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food,” the recall notice said.
