Beijing International Airport Bomb Exploded By Man In Wheelchair, Chinese Media Reports
A man in a wheelchair detonated a homemade bomb Saturday at the Beijing Capital International Airport, injuring himself.
Xinhua, China's official news agency, reported that the man "ignited bombs on himself" at the airport's busy Terminal 3 at 6:24 p.m. Witnesses told the agency that the man was shouting before the detonation. No other injuries were reported.
Details are still emerging. Some outlets reported that the explosion was an apparent protest against police brutality. Others said Beijing police have no known motive.
The man is being identified by Chinese media as Ji Zhongxing, from the city of Heze in the Shandong province. Zhongxing was born in 1979, according to reports.
China's state-run CCTV said Zhongxing was taken to the hospital. According to the network, the bomb was set off with black powder, which is used in fireworks and is relatively easy to obtain in China.
Beijing Capital is one of the world’s busiest airports. Its Terminal 3 was opened in 2008 ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
Reuters reported that the airport had returned to normal about 90 minutes after the explosion.
