Bella Hadid got candid about her insecurities growing up in a new interview.
The 25-year-old model talked about feeling like the “uglier sister” while growing up with her older sibling Gigi Hadid, 26, in her cover story for the April 2022 issue of Vogue.
“I was the uglier sister. I was the brunette. I wasn’t as cool as Gigi, not as outgoing. That’s really what people said about me,” Bella told the fashion magazine.
She admitted that hearing those criticisms made her believe them, and they took a toll on her confidence. But she made it clear that other people couldn’t complain about her work ethic.
“When you get told things so many times, you do just believe it. I always ask myself, how did a girl with incredible insecurities, anxiety, depression, body-image issues, eating issues, who hates to be touched, who has intense social anxiety—what was I doing getting into this business?” Bella said.
She continued, “But over the years I became a good actress. I put on a very smiley face, or a very strong face. I always felt like I had something to prove. People can say anything about how I look, about how I talk, about how I act. But in seven years I never missed a job, canceled a job, was late to a job. No one can ever say that I don’t work my ass off.”
Yolanda Hadid and Mohamed Hadid’s second daughter admitted that because of the misconceptions about her online, people would always be surprised when they meet her in real life.
“The majority of the time when I meet people, they say, I just didn’t think you were going to be nice, that you were going to be this mean, scary dragon lady, or some kind of a sexbot. That’s just not me, and if people have a better understanding of who I am, then I feel less alone within myself,” she said.
Bella also bravely addressed the plastic surgery rumors that plagued her through the years. She came clean about getting her nose done at the age of 14 and now regretting her decision to do it, as per People.
“I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors. I think I would have grown into it,” she said. “People think I fully f—ked with my face because of one picture of me as a teenager looking puffy. I’m pretty sure you don’t look the same now as you did at 13, right?”
Bella insisted that she never had lip fillers. She said she has no issues with it, but it’s not for her. She also maintained that she never got her eyes lifted; she instead used the “oldest trick in the book,” which is face tape.
In the cover story, Bella, who is currently dating art director Marc Kalman, 33, according to the New York Post, also talked about her mental health struggles and battle with anorexia and other health issues, including Lyme disease.
