Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds: Dullahan Favored After I'll Have Another Scratched From Triple Crown Race
With Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another scratched from tomorrow's Belmont Stakes, Dullahan is now the favorite to win the race at Belmont Park at 9 to 5 odds, according to Belmont Stakes 2012 odds posted on sportsbook.com.
The hype surrounding Saturday's Belmont Stakes suffered a setback after I'll Have Another, the winner of the first two legs of horse racing's Triple Crown - the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes - was scratched from the Belmont Stakes due to tendonitis, ending his racing career.
Though it's far from tragic, no one died or anything like that, but it's extremely disappointing and I feel so sorry for the whole team, said Doug O'Neill, the trainer for I'll Have Another. We have had such an amazing run, you know.
I'll Have Another, who was heavily favored to win the Belmont Stakes at 4 to 5 odds, was vying to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown.
Now that the horse won't make history, the smart money has turned to Dullahan, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby. He has only two wins in his career - the Blue Grass Stakes in April and the Breeders' Futurity in October.
At 5 to 2 odds, Dullahan is the favorite to win tomorrow's Belmont Stakes, according to sportsbook.com.
Dullahan is owned by the Iowa-based Donegal Racing.
Donegal Racing partner Jerry Crawford told the Des Moines Register he was confident in Dullahan's chances.
If we win, we'll show that we were a really good horse all along. It certainly won't be a fluke, he said. We feel like we were unlucky to lose to [I'll Have Another] the last time.
Dullahan's main competition, according to sportsbook.com, will be Union Rags, who has 3 to 1 odds to win the Belmont Stakes.
Union Rags, trained by Michael Matz and ridden by jockey Jonathan Velazquez, finished a disappointing seventh in the Kentucky Derby. Union Rags started his year with three straight victories, including a win at Belmont Park in October during the Champagne Stakes.
Velazquez told the Boston Herald that Union Rags could pull of a win in tomorrow's Belmont Stakes.
The talent is there, definitely, Velazquez said earlier in the week. Hopefully his luck changes in this race and he can show the talent he has.
