KEY POINTS

  • Financing options that Best Buy offered may have leaked how much the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be sold for
  • Because Best Buy is offering finance deals that span 18 months for next-gen consoles, this is usually only offered for electronics that cost more than $499
  • Neither Sony nor Microsoft has yet to confirm how much they will sell their respective next-gen consoles for

Did Best Buy just reveal what the prices of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be? The retailer offered financing options that suggest both consoles will cost more than $500.

Both offerings from Sony and Microsoft are set to release by the end of the year yet neither company has announced a price tag or even an actual release date. With both companies engaged in a high stakes cat-and-mouse game waiting for the other to announce before they do, it has led to intense speculation from members of the gaming industry.

In the months leading up to the respective releases of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, the cost of each has been the subject of rumors with Chinese retailers and websites reporting that the PS5 could cost between $399 and $499 depending on the standard edition or the digital-only edition, notes ScreenRant.

Previous rumors had pointed to the Xbox Series X costing upwards of $600 when it is actually released this November.

According to DualShockers, U.S.-based Best Buy has begun to advertise financing deals for both consoles. The vast majority of gaming systems are available to finance over 12 months, due to the fact that they cost less than $400. This includes the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One X.

However, Best Buy is only offering finance deals that span 18 months for next-gen consoles, which is something the store usually only does for electronics that cost more than $499. This has led to the speculation that both consoles will cost at least $500 when they arrive for the holiday season.

Still, there is a possibility that the information on the Best Buy site is merely a placeholder until official prices are announced.

Whatever the prices of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X may be, gamers will be able to save some money if they intend to play games on current and next-gen hardware. Some publishers have already revealed that players can upgrade current-gen versions of their games to the enhanced next-gen editions at no additional cost.

That will not be the case for every game, but “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla,” “DOOM Eternal,” “Cyberpunk 2077,” and “Dirt 5” will provide that option.

Still, until the manufacturers reveal exactly how much the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will actually cost, gamers will remain in the dark, hanging on to leaks and rumors for any word on the matter. It’s an unfortunate situation for consumers who are planning to save to buy these consoles, but neither Sony nor Microsoft is blinking as of yet.
