Best Midseason Cliffhangers 2014: Why We Can't Wait For 'Vampire Diaries,' 'Scandal,' 'Outlander' And More To Return To TV
TV winter hiatuses are no fun, and midseason cliffhangers make the break almost unbearable. Some shows have left character lives in the balance while others have broken up major couples. Here are the midseason cliffhangers that left us counting down the minutes until the midseason premieres:
“The Vampire Diaries” -- Damon (Ian Somerhalder) thought Elena (Nina Dobrev) stood him up in the midseason finale because he couldn’t see her. What he didn’t realize is that Kai (Chris Wood) put a cloaking spell on her. Elena can’t be seen by anyone until she helps the murderer.
“Scandal” -- Olivia (Kerry Washington) was kidnapped by people working for Vice President Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney). It turns out Nichols was working with and hooking up with Elizabeth North (Portia de Rossi), the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee. The two had been hatching a plan to take down President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn).Olivia's boyfriend, Jake (Scott Foley), and Fitz are an unlikely duo, but they’ll have to work together to if they want to save the woman they both love.
“Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” -- Skye (Chloe Bennet) was revealed to be an Inhuman as well as comic book character Daisy Johnson in the winter finale. Unfortunately, in the process, Triplett (BJ Britt) was killed. Skye will have to figure out how her new powers work, but she wasn’t the only Inhuman in the midseason finale. Raina (Ruth Negga) also received powers, but we don’t know what they are or how she'll use them.
“Reign” -- Mary (Adelaide Kane) told Francis (Tony Regbo) she was over him and their marriage would just be a front for the kingdom. She also discovered Francis' cousin, Conde (Sean Teale), was in love with her when she found a letter from him. Princess Claude (Rose Williams) also poisoned her own mother, Queen Catherine (Megan Follows). Viewers don’t know if she survived the midseason finale.
“Once Upon a Time” -- Belle (Emilie De Ravin) banished Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) from Storybrooke after he chose Dark Magic over her, but he had a plan to get back. At the end of the winter finale, he met up with a custodian at an aquarium who turned out to be Ursula (Merrin Dungey). He worked with her to get Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) and Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and return to Storybrooke to wreak havoc on the town.
“Resurrection” -- With the death of Tom (Mark Hildreth), the anti-Returned group is stronger than ever. Members even protested his memorial. While Henry (Kurtwood Smith) was getting into a fight with the protesters, Jacob (Landon Gimenez) told Margaret (Michelle Fairley) he wanted to go away. She led him away without a goodbye to his parents. While the parents frantically searched for Jacob, Bellamy (Omar Epps) and Maggie (Devin Kelly) searched for a cure for the virus to prevent it from killing all of the Returned.
“Arrow” -- Is Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) really dead after his fight with Ra's Al Ghul (Matt Nable) in the Season 3 midseason finale? He was thrown off a cliff, so it seems that way. However, we’re guessing that he’ll find a way back since the show is called “Arrow.”
"Castle" -- Castle (Nathan Fillion) was banned from working with Beckett (Stana Katic) and the rest of the police force after his mob ties interfered with a case and got a suspect killed. When Season 7 returns he will be working as a P.I., but fans don’t know if he’ll ever be allowed to work with the police department again.
"The Flash" -- Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanaugh) was revealed to have a suit identical to that of Reverse Flash at the end of the Season 1 midseason finale. This leaves a lot of questions for fans. Was he the second meta-human in the room when Barry's (Grant Gustin) mom was killed? If not, he might still know who was there.
“Red Band Society” -- The Season 1 midseason finale showed Emma (Ciara Bravo) going home after she convinced her doctors she had overcome her eating disorder. However, she was passed out on the bathroom floor as soon as she got home. Fans are awaiting the show’s return, but the final three episodes of the season (and possibly series) have not been scheduled.
“Nashville” -- In the Season 3 midseason finale, Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) and Avery (Jonathan Jackson) got married while Rayna (Connie Britton) and Luke (Will Chase) broke up. Fans want to know if she’ll get back together with Deacon (Charles Esten), but Deacon might have cancer.
“Grey's Anatomy” -- Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) learned Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April's (Sarah Drew) baby has a rare disease and won’t survive. However, Stephanie still hasn’t given them her diagnosis. Also, Derek's (Patrick Demsey) sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) may have a way to save Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) from her brain tumor, but first Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) will have to reveal she got Dr. Herman’s medical files without permission.
“Revenge” -- At one point, it seemed like David (James Tupper) would kill for Victoria (Madeleine Stowe). However, Daniel’s (Joshua Bowman) death changed everything. It seems he is fine with the idea of killing Victoria now.
“The Originals” -- The Original witch Esther (Sonja Sohn) was turned into a vampire in the winter finale. She is responsible for creating the vampires, but she despises them. Now she has a choice: be the creature she hates or kill herself.
“How To Get Away With Murder” -- Wes (Alfred Enoch) was revealed as Sam’s (Tom Verica) killer in the Season 1 midseason finale, but the real twist was Annalise’s (Viola Davis) involvement. She saw Wes standing over Sam’s dead body, so she knows exactly what happened with the students.
“Outlander” -- Fans are still reeling from the September finale of the Scottish drama. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) was being threatened by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) and it seemed like she’d be raped -- until Jamie (Sam Heughan) came in through the window. He’ll have to fight Black Jack for his wife’s safety.
