Best Quarterbacks Of All Time: Patrick Mahomes Already Ranks Among Greatest QBs In NFL History
Patrick Mahomes isn't simply the best quarterback in the NFL after winning Super Bowl 2023. The Kansas City Chiefs star has established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time with a chance to rank as the top player in league history when his career is finished.
It might seem wildly premature to rank a 27-year-old quarterback among the all-time greats. When taking a look at what Mahomes has accomplished, there's no choice but to mention him with some of the best quarterbacks who have ever played in the NFL.
Mahomes' stats and accolades to begin his career are unparalleled. After riding the bench for his rookie season, Mahomes has been the Chiefs' starting quarterback for five straight seasons. In those five years, some of Mahomes' achievements are already on par with the greatest signal callers of all time.
In Kansas City's 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Mahomes joined Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks to ever win multiple regular-season and Super Bowl MVP awards. While it only took Mahomes six years to win two MVP awards and two championships, Brady needed 11 seasons to accomplish the feat. Montana did it in 12 years.
Mahomes is one of 13 starting quarterbacks to win multiple Super Bowls. Mahomes has the same number of championships as John Elway, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Roger Staubach. He has more titles than Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Steve Young, Drew Brees and Dan Marino.
Where exactly on the list of all-time quarterbacks does Mahomes rank?
Obviously, Brady is considered No. 1 with seven championships, five Super Bowl MVP awards, and just about every important quarterback record. Mahomes is still chasing Montana and his four championships. It's going to take more than just five Hall-of-Fame seasons — as great as they have been — for Mahomes to pass the likes of Elway, Manning or Marino.
Between their longevity and seven combined MVP awards, Favre and Rodgers are still ahead of the Chiefs' star, as well. Johnny Unitas had an argument for the greatest quarterback of all time before Brady took the mantle.
Finding Mahomes' exact spot on the all-time list is difficult because he's only played six years and might be one-third of the way into his career. Everything that he's accomplished, however, probably makes him a borderline top-10 all-time quarterback, and he's three years shy of his 30th birthday.
In terms of greatest all-time careers, Mahomes will fall well short of the top spot on every list in 2023 because he lacks the longevity. If an NFL team had to pick any quarterback in history to win a single game, however, Mahomes be might the right choice.
Even when factoring in how much easier it is to throw the ball in today's NFL, Mahomes' stats are mind-blowing. Mahomes' career 105.7 passer rating is more than two points ahead of Rodgers for the best in league history. Mahomes 303.0 passing yards per game are 15.5 yards better than anyone else. If Mahomes continues his current pace, he'll crack the top 10 for passing touchdowns when he's just 32 years old.
Mahomes is averaging 4,791 yards, 38.4 touchdowns and 9.6 interceptions per year. He has never won fewer than 11 games in a season. Mahomes has an 11-3 playoff record with a 107.4 passer rating.
Barring serious injuries, Mahomes is on track to become a top-five all-time quarterback, at minimum. Although it's still early, he at least appears positioned to potentially challenge Brady atop the list.
Brady separated himself from every other quarterback by reaching 10 Super Bowls, winning seven championships and playing at a high level until he was 45 years old. Brady was fortunate enough to play for Bill Belichick, who is considered among the greatest coaches of all time. The duo formed two separate dynasties with the New England Patriots.
Andy Reid and Mahomes might be in the middle of the NFL's next dynasty. The Chiefs have hosted the AFC Championship Game in all five seasons with Mahomes as their starter. Kansas City has played in three of the last four Super Bowls. The Chiefs' 75 wins since 2018 are the second-most of any NFL team in a five-year span.
As long as Reid and Mahomes stay together, the Chiefs can be perennial Super Bowl contenders and Mahomes can build on his legacy.
