Bestherbs Coffee Company's Male Enhancement Product Recalled For Containing Viagra-Like Ingredient
A coffee company Bestherbs Coffee LLC, based out of Grand Prairie, Texas is recalling one of its coffee products, which was found to contain a substance similar to an active ingredient in Viagra that is used to cure erectile dysfunction, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report which confirmed the presence last week.
Bestherbs Coffee LLC has been voluntarily recalling all of its "New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee" after the FDA found the undeclared ingredient, which has a structural similarity to the active ingredient sildenafil, in Viagra.
The FDA in its recall report last week said: "the analysis confirmed the presence of desmethyl carbodenafil. Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED). New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee also contains undeclared milk."
According to FDA, the undeclared milk could act as a potential risk to people who are lactose intolerant and suffers from allergy or sensitivity to it. The coffee had been marketed as a male enhancement product, however, did not disclose that it contained the ingredient which could give a Viagra-like effect or boost. The coffee, which was mainly targeted towards male customers, was a threat to men who have high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure or cholesterol or the ones who suffer from a heart disease.
The FDA also in their report: "The undeclared compound may interact with nitrates in some prescription drugs, which could lower blood pressure to dangerous levels."
No serious health issues or illnesses have been reported yet after the consumption of the product. According to an FDA recall report on July 13, "consumers that have a stock of New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee which is being recalled should stop using/discard/ and contact their doctor. Please return the product to Bestherbs Coffee LLC, 4250 Claremont Dr, Grand Prairie, TX 75052. Customers returning the product will be reimbursed by check for the returned goods and postage."
Bestherbs Coffee had been distributing the coffee nationwide starting from July 2014 through June 2016. Each box of the "Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee" that had been sold till now, came with 25 packets, each containing 13-gram packs of instant coffee.
"Kopi Jantan" is a Malaysian phrase that roughly means "male coffee." Such products can still be found on eBay sold by different manufacturers who seem to claim their product will "improve energy, sexual ability, and also increase vigor."

Bestherbs Coffee owner Albert Yee told the Washington Post he expected over hundred bags of the product to be returned after the recalls began last week. "There are whole streets of it, like tequila in Mexico," Yee told the Post by phone on Thursday and explained to the newspaper how one-man import business in Texas was facing such an ordeal and was amid a voluntarily recall process after the FDA report.
This is not the first time coffee products containing the ingredient have been recalled by the FDA. In May, instant coffee distributor Caverflo.com voluntarily recalled its "natural herbal coffee" after FDA confirmed the presence of ingredients such as Sildenafil and Tadalafil in it. Sildenafil and Tadalafil are both used treating for treating erectile dysfunction. In their report, FDA said Caverflo.com was recalling their product, packaged in 25-gram foil packs.
