Megan Thee Stallion won the best female hip hop artist award Sunday at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards 2021. The songwriter accepted the award while thanking her mother, Holly Thomas.
The 26-year-old rapper's mother had passed away in 2019 due to a brain tumor.
Stallion also bagged seven nominations during the BET Awards. While she accepted the award with an emotional speech, she also honored all the women nominated in the same category and said she thought "highly" of them. "I think highly of all the women nominated in this category," she said.
Cardi B, Coi Leray, Doja Cat, Latto, and Saweetie were among the nominees in the same category.
"Everybody knows I am a girl's girl, and I just want to say thank you, mama," the rapper said from the stage. "Thank you, mama, for even putting it in me to want to be a female rapper and putting the work ethic inside of me and the drive and the push."
Stallion also took a moment to thank Cardi B after her mother. The two rappers won the Best Collaboration and the Video of the Year Awards for their hit song "WAP."
"Now that my breath is caught and I can talk about it," she noted. "I really forgot to say, thank you, Cardi, for even putting me on "W.A.P." because it makes me feel so good to be acknowledged by one of my peers, who I think so highly of."
The event took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, where the rapper performed her newly-dropped track, "Thot Sh-t."
This year's ceremony celebrated "the year of the Black Women." Taraji P. Henson, who hosted the show took the stage to declare that the 2021 BET Awards is presenting "100 percent of our full blackness," according to E!
She went on to explain why this event was important. "Because this is where we matter, where our Black entertainment matters. It's 2021 and we are celebrating the year of the Black woman. Period," she said.
Stallion appeared at the BET Awards red carpet with her rapper boyfriend, Pardison Fontaine. Last month, the couple made their red carpet debut during iHeartRadio Music Awards 2021.
She last featured in DJ Khaled's music video, "I Did It" alongside Post Malone, Lil Baby, and DaBaby. The music video dropped on May 28.
Besides her music career, the rapper will make her debut in movies with "The Best Man Wedding," which is helmed by Malcolm D. Lee. The film will also star Steve Harvey, Melissa De Sousa, Bobby Brown, and Angell Conwell.
