Beyoncé In 2003 Interview: 'I Don't Need A Man,' Singer Says, 11 Years Before Divorce Rumors
Although Beyoncé and Jay Z have been together for over a decade, there are rumors that the two may split after their “On the Run Tour.” If this is the case, she may not be too sad about it.
In 2003, the singer told Newsweek that she didn't need a man in her life because she had the support of her father, Matthew Knowles. “Even now I don't need a man because I have someone who loves me and supports me without fail,” she said when when was 21. Matthew was Beyoncé’s manager, and he also managed the solo careers of her former group mates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
It's true that Beyoncé seems to be one of the most independent women of her generation, even though she has been married to Jay Z since 2008. A number of her most popular songs to date express and commend female empowerment, such as “Run the World (Girls),” “Irreplaceable,” “Single Ladies,” and, of course, her hit song with Destiny’s Child, “Independent Women.” So does she actually need Jay Z?
The rapper is reportedly desperate to try and salvage their relationship. According to sources, the 44-year-old plans to take his wife on a five-week make-or-break vacation during a pause in their “On the Run” Tour.
Recent reports sound ominous for the couple, with the New York Post saying Beyoncé viewed a $21.5 million penthouse in Chelsea. “She was very quiet, as if she was looking on the sly,” a source told the publication. In addition, the home is reportedly less than half the size of the current apartment they share in Tribeca, sparking rumors that she is trying to downsize and live without Jay Z.
Since May, it has been reported that she and her rapper hubby would be splitting up soon, with allegations that Jay Z has been cheating on the 32-year-old with a number of beauties, including protégés Rihanna and Rita Ora.
