Beyoncé’s ‘Love on Top’: 5 Things to Know [VIDEO]
Beyoncé Knowles has released another music video for another new single off her album, 4. The video for Love on Top debuted over the weekend, and the 30-year-old entertainer holds nothing back in her dance moves and costumes.
The music video is refreshing compared to the bizarre fake baby bump rumors Beyoncé has had to deal with in recent weeks. Since her appearance on an Australian talk show, Beyoncé has been accused of wearing prosthetics and hiring a surrogate, rumors her publicist called stupid, ridiculous and false.
While Beyoncé has yet to speak on the matter herself, she has remained calm and collected - and very much pregnant - in the public eye. Her first child with husband Jay-Z is due in February.
Here are five things to know about Beyoncé's Love on Top:
5 off 4. Love on Top is the fifth single to be released from Beyoncé's fourth studio album, 4.
The music video arrives just two weeks after the release of Countdown. Love on Top also joins 1+1, Best Thing I Never Had and Run the World (Girls).
The flashy costumes. For every key change to the chorus of Love on Top, Beyoncé (and her back-up dancers) go through a series of flashy costume changes.
From a simple black body suit, the singer changes to a gold and black pantsuit number, to a white and gold outfit, to an all-black pantsuit complete with a top hat. Beyoncé's last high-pitched key leaves her with a black jacket and shorts, before jumping back to the original rehearsal outfit. (Her hair also seems to increase in volume as the key changes).
The New Edition connection. Beyoncé is not the first to pull the rehearsal look of music videos. Flashback to 1988, when R&B group New Edition released the music video for If It Isn't Love, the first single from their album Heart Break.
In conjunction with the release of Love on Top, the singer gave a shout out to New Edition on her Web site over the weekend:
I have worked very hard on this video, this song is special to me and I had an idea for the video based on some of my favorite male groups. I remember seeing videos from New Edition, The Jackson 5 and the Temptations, bands I love for their beautiful harmonies, and precise choreography and I always wanted to make a video and be part of a boy group myself, she wrote.
Baby Countdown. Unlike the high energy dance moves, wild facial expressions and set changes in Countdown, Love on Top is simple, fresh and clean cut.
Love on Top also shows little of Beyoncé's baby bump, meaning that the singer most likely filmed the music video before her pregnancy began to show.
MTV. Love on Top was the first song Beyoncé performed after announcing her pregnancy on the MTV Video Music Awards in August. The dance moves - and Beyoncé's giant grin - in the music video are reminiscent of the moves in the live performance.
Fittingly, like the lyrics in Love on Top, Beyoncé is showing the world why I'm smiling out from ear to ear.
