KEY POINTS

  • Conservatives called out Chris Wallace for his performance as debate moderator
  • Former Fox host Bill O'Reilly accused Wallace of being ill-prepared
  • Radio personality Larry Elder said Biden was the bully, not Trump

President Donald Trump on Wednesday gave himself top marks for his debate performance, tweeting clips from the debate, while conservative commentators condemned the performance of moderator Chris Wallace, who was unable to rein in either Trump or Democratic rival Joe Biden during Tuesday’s raucous first presidential debate.

During a discussion on health care, Trump repeatedly interrupted Biden to the point where Biden called the president a “clown” and told him to just “shut up.”

"Folks, do you have any idea what this clown is doing?" Biden said. "I'll tell you what, he is not for any help for people needing health care because he has in fact already cost 10 million people their health care that they had from their employers because of his recession."

Conservatives rushed to Trump's defense. Republican radio personality Larry Elder took issue with Trump being characterized as a bully.

Former George Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer said Biden actually interrupted Trump first and media consultant Richard Grenell accused Wallace of only interrupting Trump.

Trump thanked Fleischer for his analysis.

Conservative talk show host Mark Levin said Biden, “got away with endless lies and cheap shots.”

Former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly accused Wallace, his former colleague, of being ill-prepared. Ryan Fournier, the founder and chairman of Students for Trump, called Wallace "the worst moderator" ever.

Nick Short of the Claremont Institute took issue with Wallace asking Trump to condemn white supremacists and the Proud Boys but not asking Biden to condemn Black Lives Matter and antifa.

There has been widespread criticism from the left over Trump referencing the Proud Boys and telling them to "stand by." The group describes themselves as "western chauvinists" and are designated as a hate group. Fox News pundits have mostly avoided discussing Trump mentioning the Proud Boys.

Trump on Wednesday said he didn't know of the Proud Boys despite referencing them in the debate.

“I don’t know who the Proud Boys are. I mean, you’ll have to give me a definition because I really don’t know who they are,” Trump told White House reporters. “I can only say they have to stand down and let law enforcement do their work.”

Among many Fox News personalities, Laura Ingraham lauded the president’s overall performance.

Conservative syndicated talk radio and podcast host Dana Loesch chided Biden for rejecting Trump’s right to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.

At a conservative watch party in Pennsylvania, staunch Trump supporters were appalled, BuzzFeed reported.

“I think that the American people were greatly disserved tonight [Tuesday] by the lack of civility between both gentlemen,” Joseph Madagan of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, told BuzzFeed. “The overtalking was unproductive and was, I believe, certainly counterproductive.”

Edward X. Young, a New Jersey resident who traveled 140 miles to attend the watch party and was sporting a MAGA hat and several pro-Trump pins, told BuzzFeed the debate “seemed more like [a] WWE” match.

At a conservative watch party in Biden's hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, attendees gave Trump credit for what they claimed was a debate between Trump and both Biden and Wallace.

"Nobody really won because I didn’t learn anything from either side,” said student Nicholas Haas.

Lynette Villano, 74, clad on a red-white-and-blue dress and wearing a Trump broach and earrings, said Biden’s performance was better than expected, likely because “he rested up for a couple of days,” Yahoo News reported.
