KEY POINTS
- President Joe Biden spent the Presidents Day weekend with his family at Camp David
- His granddaughter Naomi Biden posted an Instagram story of him playing "Mario Kart"
- She also tweeted photos of Biden wearing a Camp David hat with the word “Pop” embroidered in the back
In celebration of Presidents Day, President Joe Biden spent the weekend with his family at Camp David to enjoy some quality time together. During the trip, his granddaughter, Naomi Biden, posted an image of the president playing (and winning) a game of “Mario Kart” against her on Instagram.
“Secret Service made an exception and let him drive himself!” Naomi, the daughter of Hunter Biden, captioned the photo showing her and her grandfather playing the arcade-style game. “A little rusty but he still won (barely).”
On Sunday, she also tweeted two photos of Biden wearing a Camp David hat with the word “Pop” embroidered in the back. She joked it was there to “make sure the title doesn’t go to his head.”
The president appears to be playing “Mario Kart Arcade GP-2” based on the arcade machine posted in social media. This racing game spinoff of the famous “Super Mario” franchise is widely popular as a family-friendly party game. It takes the franchises' notable characters such as the eponymous Mario, Luigi and even Pac-Man as competitors in a series of go-kart races across many fantastical locations.
On Twitter, Forbes reporter Andrew Solender shared the clip of the president racing against his grandkids. This trip marks Biden’s first visit to Camp David as president since his inauguration in January.
Camp David is a known country retreat site for presidents found in the mountains of Maryland northwest of the White House. The camp is home to a number of recreational facilities such as a practice golf course, swimming pool, bowling alley, archery range and a games arcade.
A number of these facilities were personally requested by the country’s previous presidents, such as former President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s three-hole golf course.
Camp David is officially designated as the “Naval Support Facility Thurmont,” and all of the country’s previous presidents have had access to it during their terms.
The facility has also been used to host foreign dignitaries. One notable event was the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978 involving then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and former prime minister of Israel Menachem Begin during President Jimmy Carter’s term.
Other notable international political events held in Camp David include the 38th G8 Summit in 2012 and the 2020 G7 Summit, which was canceled by former President Donald J. Trump over fears of the COVID-19 pandemic.
