President Joe Biden has unveiled the federal student loan forgiveness application, which will allow millions of Americans to receive up to $20,000 in debt relief.

President Joe Biden announces the application for student loan forgiveness is now open on Twitter.

On Monday Biden formally launched the program which had been beta-tested over the weekend, with over 8 million borrowers submitting applications.

"My commitment was if elected president, I was going to make government work to deliver for the people. This rollout keeps that commitment," Biden said. "Just as I am keeping my commitment to relieve student debt as borrowers recover from this economic crisis caused by the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic."

In August, Biden announced his plan to cancel student loan debt up to $10,000 for individuals making less than $125,000 a year, or as much as $20,000 for eligible Pell Grant recipients.

"This is a game changer for millions of Americans," Biden said. "It took an incredible amount of effort to get this website done in such a short time."

The Department of Education is being sued over the student loan forgiveness policy. A federal judge has been asked to block the program while the lawsuits are pending.

How to apply

Applications are now available in English and Spanish at Studentaid.gov. The form will include information on student debt relief and qualification requirements. Applicants must submit their Social Security number, name, date of birth, phone number, email, and an attestation they earn less than the cap set for relief. Individuals seeking to apply must have federally held student loans to qualify.
