‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Trailer: Meryl Streep’s Character Calls Out Reese Witherspoon
“Game of Thrones” returns Sunday, but HBO is already getting ready for another returning hit. “Big Little Lies” will start shortly after the fantasy show wraps up, and a Season 2 trailer was released Sunday.
The teaser video shows that life isn’t easy for the women after they covered up Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) death in Season 1. “We’re kidding ourselves if we think people will stop talking,” Celeste (Nicole Kidman) says.
Jane (Shailene Woodley) is recognized as one of the Monterey Five. It seems the women are infamous for being suspects in the murder case. She feels like they all have scarlet letters now that they’re connected to the case.
Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) is the most paranoid. She, of course, was the one who actually pushed Perry down the stairs, leading to his death. “It’s gonna get us. It’s gonna get us all,” she says. Is the lying too much for her to handle?
It’s not just the cops and gossip-driven community who are suspicious. Perry’s mother, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep), is in town, and she already knows that Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) can’t be trusted.
“My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night. I’m very tempted to ask you, but I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?” Streep’s character says to Madeline.
“Big Little Lies” Season 2 will venture into mostly unknown territory. While the first season was based on Lianne Moriarty’s book of the same name, it ran through most of the novel’s story arc. However, much of Bonnie’s backstory was left unexplored, and that may finally be shown as the show deals with the fallout of Perry’s death.
In addition to the actresses above, cast members Laura Dern, Adam Scott, Jeffrey Nordling and James Tupper are also set to come back.
Not returning, however, is director Jean-Marc Vallée, who helmed every Season 1 episode. Instead, all seven “Big Little Lies” Season 2 episodes are directed and executive produced by Andrea Arnold.
“Big Little Lies” Season 2 premieres June 9 on HBO, three weeks after the “Game of Thrones” series finale.
