‘Big Little Lies’ Spoilers: Did Jane Confront Her Rapist In Episode 5? [RECAP]

“Big Little Lies” Season 1, episode 5 revealed more information about the three main characters, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley) and Celeste (Nicole Kidman), as well as their pasts.

In “Once Bitten,” Renata (Laura Dern) tells Jane that the latter’s son, Ziggy (Iain Armitage), once again bit her daughter, Amabella (Ivy George). Jane is upset because Renata has already accused Ziggy of physically hurting Amabella in school.

Jane soon realizes that Ziggy might be lying to her, and she cannot really trust her son because he is not on good terms with his father. It is later on revealed that Ziggy is a product of sexual abuse. Jane was abused by a man named Saxon Banks, whose real name is actually Saxon Baker. Unfortunately, she only sees him from a distance and has yet to confront him.

Elsewhere, Madeline is also struggling with some issues of her own. She slept with her ex-partner, Joseph (Santiago Cabrera), who in turn confesses that he still loves her. Madeline cannot reciprocate his love because she is already happily married to her husband. The two get into an accident that leaves Joseph in a terrible state. Madeline finds it difficult to explain to her husband why she was in Joseph’s car, but he turns out to be most understanding of the situation. This makes Madeline feel worse over what she did to him.

Meanwhile, Celeste had a breakdown in the fifth episode of the hit HBO series. She is being sexually abused by her husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). Despite his promises that he would change, Perry goes back to his old ways of physically hurting Celeste. The latter seeks help by going to therapy, but when Perry asks her to pick him up from the airport, she immediately does what she is told.

“Big Little Lies” airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on HBO.
