- Captain Insano was a role that he played in the 1998 sports comedy "The Waterboy"
Former WWE superstars have found life after leaving the company when they joined the Tony Khan-run All Elite Wrestling (AEW), and the man formerly known as "The Big Show" is no different.
Now wrestling under his real name, Paul Wight signed with AEW in February 2021 after he and WWE failed to come to terms about a contract extension.
Wight first made his debut with the organization as a commentator with Tony Schiavone as part of the “AEW Dark: Elevation” YouTube series, a show where up and coming performers can showcase their wares against each other and with other established veterans.
He would also have the occasional match here and there, most notably defeating QT Marshall at All Out in 2021.
As for what is next in his illustrious career that is nearing 30 years, Wight was interviewed by Wrestling Inc.’s managing editor Nick Hausman about the news regarding him securing the rights to use “Captain Insano” on AEW programming.
“He’ll be back. The guy who wrote The Waterboy has approved. Tony Khan and I have secured the rights to Captain Insano. There’s already an outfit made, the whole nine yards. We’re doing a lot of prep work, and this will be my last hoorah so to speak,” Wight told Hausman as quoted by Wrestling Inc.
Captain Insano is a fictional pro wrestler that Wight portrayed in the 1998 hit sports comedy film “The Waterboy” with Adam Sandler playing the titular role.
Wight was quick to mention that his upcoming Captain Insano gimmick is not gunning for the AEW title at all, but more of him having the freedom to enjoy his last few runs in the ring while also leaving fond memories with the fans.
“At this point, I think this character is just to have fun. We’ll see how it goes, but for me right now, this is just a chance to have fun with this character and be a bright spot on the show. We’ll see how I’m feeling, and we’ll see how everybody takes off with it,” he stated.
At 50 years old with a long list of injuries under his belt, Wight is fully aware that his time as an in-ring performer is coming to an end and the end of his Captain Insano run might as well be the best way for him to cap it off.
