It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all, however, in 2016 there was plenty of love lost in Hollywood. From the most shocking splits to the ones we saw coming this year was filled with breakups and broken hearts.
Below is a list of the biggest celebrity breakups of 2016:
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Brangelina was the ultimate Hollywood it couple, the pure definition of relationship goals, and when the actress filed for divorce from her husband in September after two years of marriage, everyone was shocked. The couple, who started dating in 2004, share six children: Shiloh, Knox, Vivienne, Pax, Maddox, and Zahara.
Mariah Carey and James Packer
After ending her marriage to Nick Cannon, Carey snagged herself a billionaire. However, Packer ended their engagement in October after what was reportedly a terrible Greece getaway.
Rihanna and Drake
The end of Rihanna and Drake may not not have been dramatic, but it was just as devastating. The couple, who had been dating off for years, reportedly ended their romance in October just months after the rapper told the songstress that he was in love with her at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney
The couple ended their five-year romance in July following their February 2015 engagement. Despite the split, the singer asked fans to root for her relationship, saying they are still very much in love. Sources blamed the break up on long distance.
Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart
After a brief split in 2014, the couple seemed to be going strong before finally ending their five-year relationship in August. Over the summer, the songstress posed in front of a wall of graffiti with the words “Protect Yo Heart” written across it.
Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts
Although the couple has never confirmed whether or not they were secretly married, in September, they did announce that they were ending their 11-year relationship. Schreiber and Watts share two sons, Samuel and Alexander.
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
In June, the couple called off their romance after dating for a little over a year. Aside from the split, the bigger news was that the “Bad Blood” singer started dating actor Tom Hiddleston shortly after the break up, spending Fourth of July with him and her closest friends.
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp
After ending his 14-year romance with Vanessa Paradis, Depp began dating Heard, who he met on the set of their 2012 film “The Rum Diary.” After 15 months of marriage, the actress filed for divorce in May and made claims that the actor abused her. Heard walked away with $7 million in the divorce settlement, all of which which she plans to donate to charity.
Lea Michele and Matthew Paetz
Many were happy to learn that Michele found love after losing her boyfriend and “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith to an overdose in 2013. However, her romance to Paetz ended abruptly after nearly two years of dating in February. The actress was reportedly “blindsided” by the breakup.
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
The two had been going strong since her Disney days and just like that it was all over. After six years together, the duo announced the end of their relationship in June via Instagram. Despite the end of the romance, Lovato and Valderrama insisted that they “will always be supportive of one another.”
Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey
After quickly marrying Dorsey following her split from rapper Big Sean, Rivera filed for divorce from her husband in November after two years of marriage. The two share one child, son Josey.
Zac Efron and Sami Miro
It marked his first serious relationship since his 2010 split from high school musical co-star Vanessa Hudgens. After two years together, the couple split in April in what may have been a bitter break up. Shortly after the end of the romance the actor unfollowed his ex-girlfriend on Instagram and deleted all traces of her off of his account.
