Pfizer Inc. announced on Tuesday that it will recall at least one million birth control pill packets in the U.S. because they don't prevent pregnancy, the company reported.

Pfizer said the birth control pills recalled contain an incorrect amount of active tablets or are out of order, which prevent the medication from preventing pregnancy. The pills' packaging mistake was a result of failures from the inspection department, according to Pfizer.

As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy, said Pfizer, in a statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site.

There are no safety or health risks in association with the recall, the company said, but was issued for the risk of unintended pregnancy.

The affected pills are 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets with expiration dates ranging from July 31, 2013, to March 31, 2014. The pills were distributed to warehouses, clinics and retail pharmacies nationwide.

Pfizer said that consumers exposed to affected packaging should begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately, contact their doctors and return the medication to their pharmacy. Any adverse effects should be reported to Akrimax Medical Information at 1-877-509-3935 (8 AM to 7 PM Mon-Fri CST) or to FDA's Med Watch Program.
