  • An expert confirmed it was a large Elephant Hawkmoth

People have always been coming across weird creatures in their homes and backyards. Among them is a family in England that stumbled upon a bizarre animal that looked like a "dried-up snake" in their garden.

Britt Whitmarsh from Cheshire was on FaceTime with her grandparents Tuesday when they showed her a creature they had found in their garden, Ladbible reported.

"Truthfully, I thought it was an old dried-up snake until it started moving. My grandparents spotted it this morning. My Nan goes out every morning to de-head any died off flowers and pick up and petals or leaves that have fallen off," Whitmarsh told Cheshire Live.

The woman quickly posted a photo of the creature on Facebook and asked her friends to help her identify it.

Soon, the comments section was filled with some bizarre advices.

"Get an exorcist," one person commented.

"Yeah, basically burn the garden down to its roots ... or, move house," wrote another person.

Luckily, before she could destroy her grandparents' garden, she was told by an expert it was just an Elephant Hawkmoth.

Animal and Plant Director at Chester Zoo, Mike Jordan, told her that when the animal feels threatened, it mimics a snake by inflating the segments behind its head. This is done to scare off any predators.

"This is a Large Elephant Hawkmoth (Deilephila elpenor). The caterpillar feeds on willowherb, but also fuchsias so is quite often seen in gardens. When disturbed, it inflates the segments behind the head to mimic a snake," he told Cheshire Live.

The creature’s name is derived from the caterpillar's resemblance to an elephant's trunk. After the caterpillar stage, the creature turns into a golden moth with pink streak across the body.

In yet another case of a human encounter with a weird creature, earlier this year, a man hunting a wild ping in the Solomon Islands came across a giant frog that was as big "as a human baby." He quickly took photos of the amphibian and got it to his village. The villagers, who were stunned by its size, began calling it "bush chicken." Soon, the photos of the frog went viral on social media.
