‘Black-ish’ Spinoff ‘Grown-ish’ Casts ‘Secret Life’ Alum Francia Raisa, Jordan Buhat
Yara Shahidi will be joined by several new cast members in the upcoming “Black-ish” spinoff, “Grown-ish.”
According to TV Line, “Secret Life of the American Teenager” alum Francia Raisa has just been cast as series regular. The actress will play the role of Ana, an outspoken and conservative freshman at Zoey’s (Shahidi) school, Southern California University.
Joining Shahidi and Fracia are Jordan Buhat and musicians Chloe x Halle. Buhat has signed on as a series regular and will be playing the role of Vivek, a first-generation Indian-American who is also a student at the university. Chloe x Halle will give life to the roles of Sky and Jazz, and they will recur in multiple episodes throughout Season 1. Sky and Jazz are twins who also happen to be in the school’s track team.
In the previous weeks, other actors have also signed on for major roles in “Grown-ish.” According to Entertainment Weekly, Deon Cole will be reprising his “Black-ish” role as Charlie. He first appeared in the series’ backdoor episode in May. Chris Parnell will also return as the university’s dean, while Trevor Jackson has been cast as a socially conscious student.
Emily Arlook will play the role of a freshman student named Miriam, who is also enrolled at Southern California University. The part was originally given to Mallory Sparks.
Earlier this month, the title for the “Black-ish” spinoff was changed from “College-ish” to “Grown-ish.” The 13-episode first season will center on Zoey’s life in college, away from her immediate family.
Series creator Kenya Barris released a statement to give viewers insight into what they can expect from the show. “‘Grown-ish’ reflects what we’ll be dealing with in the show – that in-between place where you’re not quite an adult but facing grown world problems for the first time. Where ‘Black-ish’ examines what it means to be black, ‘Grown-ish’ is an examination of what it is and what it means to be grown,” he said.
“Grown-ish” will premiere on Freeform sometime next year, while “Black-ish” Season 4 is expected to return to ABC on Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. EDT.
