‘Black Panther’ Trailer: Director Ryan Coogler Breaks Down Key Scenes
People cannot stop talking about the new “Black Panther” trailer from Marvel Studios and for good reason. It’s jam-packed with thrilling fight scenes and provided a vivid look at the fictional world of Wakanda.
In addition, it also teased a lot of secrets waiting to be unraveled. In the beginning, Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) was being questioned by Everett Ross (Martin Freeman).

Klaw asked Ross what he knew about Wakanda, and the latter answered that it is a “third world country” that specializes in “textiles” and “cool outfits.” But Klaw begged to differ, answering it is “all a front.” He boasted that he was the only one who had ever escaped Wakanda alive and that explorers have long been calling Wakanda as the misplaced “El Dorado.”
The scenes then flash to lead star Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, Forest Whitaker’s Zuri, Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia and Danai Guria’s Okoye.
A conflict within Wakanda was teased with the line, “in the future there will only be the conquered and the conquerers,” although the trailer did not provide a lot of information about it.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Coogler said that it was a fun idea to start with Ross’ interrogation of Klaw. “One person knows quite a bit about Wakanda and another person who thinks they do, but they don’t…but I thought it would be awesome to start with a character who has seen Wakanda in its true light,” he said.
Coogler then discussed the appearance of Zuri and why he plays an integral role in T’Challa’s life. “Spirituality is something that exists in Wakanda in the comics, and it’s something we wanted to have elements of in the film. Forest’s character, more than anything, is a major tie-back to T’Challa’s father. Zuri is someone he looks to for guidance,” he said.
As for T’Challa’s powers, Coogler said he has the Heart-Shaped Herb to thank for it. That, as well as the vibranium suit produced in Wakanda. “The Heart-Shaped Herb is what Black Panthers over the generations would consume, once they earn the title, which gives them their physical edge,” he said.
“Black Panther” will be released on Feb. 16, 2018.
