TC Candler did not expect to face backlash from Blackpink fans when he revealed Monday the list of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2020.
Blackpink’s Jisoo ranked 50th in Candler’s Most Beautiful Faces list for this year. Like other celebrities and personalities who made the list, Candler announced the South Korean singer's rank with a custom description, but his caption drew ire from Jisoo's fans.
While Candler began on a positive note by describing Jisoo as a singer, dancer and a 25-year-old model, he stated in the final part of the caption, “Her English is a pity.” He also failed to mention that Jisoo is an actress.
Even though the critic did not have any malicious intention, Jisoo’s fans thought that his choice of words was disrespectful.
As it turns out, the origin of “Her English is a pity” is a “Blackpink Summer Diary 2019 in Hawaii” clip. From Rosé, Jisoo learned the English phrase, “That’s a pity.” The songstress was then heard using the phrase when Lisa mispronounced “dumpling.” Jisoo jokingly told her, “Your English is a pity.”
Jisoo later told her fans that “that’s a pity” had become her favorite English phrase.
Even though the origin of the caption is known to all, Blackpink’s fans think that the phrase was used out of context. Shortly after the list was unveiled, the hashtag #ApologizeToJisooTCCandler began to trend on Twitter.
Responding to the criticism, Candler insisted that the caption was the K-pop star's own joke. “If you don’t get that the Jisoo line was HER OWN JOKE… then I don’t know what to tell you. We love Jisoo… and she will like that joke. End of discussion,” wrote Candler.
“But honestly, you can write ‘turtle rabbit kim’ or what. Don’t like this, look like you mocking her,” wrote one Twitter user.
“You've used her joke to mock her English. It's disrespectful. Just fix the description and apologize, it's not that hard,” commented another user.
When Blinks did not relent, Candler added that Jisoo would love the joke. “199 Silly Jokes... but they think that one was serious. We love Jisoo. We are not apologizing. She WILL love that joke. She wrote it,” posted the critic.
As for Jisoo, this is the second time in a row that she has made the annual 100 Most Beautiful Faces list, with 50th being her highest rank so far.
