Fans of “World of Warcraft” hoping for a console release will have to keep hoping, at least for now.
Months of speculation about “World of Warcraft: Shadowlands” coming to consoles has been shot down by Blizzard who told Polygon that the developer has “no plans” to bring the massively multiplayer online role-playing game and its new expansion to console.
As the eighth expansion pack for “World of Warcraft,” “Shadowlands” will open up the realm of the dead in Warcraft lore. It will also feature a completely overhauled leveling system, access to the Death Knight class for the races that did not previously have access to it, and new dungeons and raids.
The alpha for “World of Warcraft: Shadowlands” first began earlier this year and players quickly datamined controller support. Although the feature made players wonder if the MMO would be making the leap to the Xbox Series X, Blizzard dismissed the notion.
In a statement released on its forums, Blizzard said the gesture was made to improve accessibility to “World of Warcraft,” and let players use controllers without downloading an add-on. However, a recent rating in Brazil once again raised speculation about seeing “World of Warcraft” on consoles.
After Gematsu tweeted on Monday that Blizzard received a rating for “World of Warcraft: Shadowlands” for both Xbox Series X and PC on the Brazil Ministry of Justice’s rating website, the news went viral on Twitter.
Still, Blizzard disproved this rating as a mere mistake.
“We currently have no plans to bring World of Warcraft or Shadowlands to Xbox Series X,” a representative from Blizzard told Polygon. “The platform was listed on the Brazil Ministry of Justice rating website in error, and the entry has since been updated to reflect that the game is coming only to PC.”
“World of Warcraft: Shadowlands” is set to follow the seventh expansion pack, “World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth,” which was released in August 2018. That pack introduced the Kul Tiras and Zandalar continents and four allied races for both the Alliance and the Horde, while also adding dungeons and raids, warfronts, and uncharted islands.
Despite Blizzard’s statement denying once again an Xbox Series X move for “World of Warcraft: Shadowlands,” it would seem that fans and players of the series will have to be content with seeing it remain on personal computers in the immediate future.
