Blizzard Removes Third 'Overwatch 2' Hero Due To Bugs
KEY POINTS
- Kiriko can clip through walls by abusing Mei's Ice Wall
- Ice Wall itself is ridden with bugs that make it unviable to use
- Mei will return on Nov. 15
Another DPS hero is getting temporarily removed from "Overwatch 2" following an upsurge in the usage of a game-breaking. This marks the game's third disabled hero in less than a month since its release.
Mei is receiving the whole Bastion treatment by getting completely removed from the game—this includes Quick Play, Competitive Play and even the Heroes collection tab.
The move was done in response to an exploitable bug involving Kiriko that allowed the knife-slinging healer to no-clip through terrain and attack enemies from safety, as demonstrated by this Twitter user.
The bug had been present in "Overwatch 2" for weeks, but Blizzard only acted Tuesday. Granted, Mei is scheduled to return this Nov. 15, though this may be too long for players who primarily use this character.
Previously, Bastion and Torbjörn were disabled due to high-impact bugs of their own. The former was able to lob an obscene number of artillery shots from his ultimate, while the latter had a bug that would extend the duration of his Overload ability. Torbjörn was able to dodge a full ban on Competitive Play while he was bugged, but Bastion was not so lucky.
Both heroes were officially reinstated to all game modes after spending 15 days in Blizzard's bug-fixing workshop
"Overwatch 2" players on social media quickly pointed out how Blizzard disabled Mei and not Kiriko, who was the real beneficiary of the bug. Angry fans blamed the developers' monetization practices as the reason why Kiriko still roams free, but level-headed players reminded everyone just how broken Mei's Ice Wall is.
The ability had severe collision detection issues that led to players being able to phase through it. In some cases, it would also fail to block any damage at all. Blizzard also decided to turn the wall's flat top into a slippery surface similar to many rooftops in the game, though whether or not this was intentional is unknown.
Mei has been terrorizing casual and competitive lobbies since the original "Overwatch," but due to a number of nerfs to her kit, she's been brought to a more balanced position. However, her broken Ice Wall ability has made her less viable than usual.
