A 20-year-old Kenyan man described by local authorities as a "bloodthirsty vampire" has confessed to murdering at least 10 children over the course of five years and, in some cases, sucking their blood before killing them, police announced this week.
Masten Milimo Wanjala was arrested Wednesday in connection to the deaths of two kids whose bodies were found in a wooded area in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, the New York Post reported, citing the nation's Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
According to police, Wanjala later admitted to the "cold-blooded" murders of at least 10 children between the ages of 12 and 13, including the two who were found.
"Wanjala single-handedly massacred his victims in the most callous manner, sometimes through sucking blood from their veins before executing them," the agency said in a statement released late Wednesday.
"The vampire has been on a killing spree targeting children between the ages of 12 and 13 years. He is behind some of the kidnappings that have rocked the city in the recent past," it continued.
The police said Wanjala started his killing spree five years ago when he was barely 16. He is accused of kidnapping his first victim, a 12-year-old girl in Machakos county east of Nairobi. The young girl had her blood sucked by the killer before she was left for dead, according to authorities.
In another incident, Wanjala lured two boys from Kitengala and Mlolongo before strangling them and dumping their bodies in a sewer line, according to the killer's self-narration of the murders. Their bodies have yet to be recovered, police said.
Wanjala also demanded around 30,000 Kenyan shillings ($277) from the parents of one victim before killing him, ABS-CBN News reported, citing police.
The bodies of several victims have yet to be found, according to the outlet.
On the day of his arrest, Wanjala led detectives to Gitaruru in Kabebe where he had dumped the bodies of his latest victims from Majengo.
Detectives were able to determine that Wanjala had knocked out all of his victims with a white substance that existed in both liquid and powder form, which he either forced victims to drink or sprayed them with before they were killed.
According to police, Wanjala was "unapologetic over his actions" and told detectives that he "derived a lot of pleasure from killing his victims."
"[I]t is our belief that the criminal justice system will serve justice to the innocent souls and relieve the heavy hearts of the mourning parents, siblings and Kenyans in general," authorities said.
