Bob Odenkirk Admits To Being Bankrupt Before Playing Saul Goodman In 'Breaking Bad' [Watch]
Bob Odenkirk revealed he was bankrupt before he took on the role of Saul Goodman in the crime series, "Breaking Bad," which was released in 2008.
The 59-year-old actor explained he had made some movies and, unfortunately, they didn't work nor did he get paid, which eventually led him into a "financial hole."
"I spent some time making some feature films they weren't great," Odenkirk said on "The Howard Stern Show" on Tuesday. "I didn't get paid a lot for them. I enjoyed directing them mostly but I didn't really have direction. I didn't have a vision for these things and this journey as a director so I somehow got in this financial hole."
The actor disclosed his business manager at that time asked him to get a $90,000 loan to keep afloat. Odenkirk said he changed his business manager, who advised him to take any work possible and "bring some money through."
He went on to work in advertisements, write TV pilots, and try different things from 2003 to 2007.
Odenkirk recalled his agent contacting him and saying he was supposed to take on a role in "Breaking Bad," which was not very popular initially, and he shouldn't say no.
"I was like dude, I haven't said 'no' in a year and a half, but maybe you didn't notice that," Odenkirk joked about his financial condition at that time.
Eventually, he landed up in "Breaking Bad" around 2008. Following the success of the series, he also got a prequel spin-off series, "Better Call Saul."
On the work front, Odenkirk directed several movies and TV series including "The Near Future," "Melvin Goes to Dinner," "Highway to Oblivion," "Let's Go to Prison," Face to Bush," "The Brothers Solomon" and "Comedy by the Numbers."
"Better Call Saul" season 6 is slated to release on April 18. It will consist of 13 episodes and mark the final season of the series. It will also star Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Michael Mando, Tony Dalton, Giancarlo Esposito and Patrick Fabian.
On the personal front, Odenkirk shares two children -- Nate, 23, and Erin, 21 -- with his wife Naomi Odenkirk.
