Bob Seger's Home Robbed By Daughter's Party Guest, Cops Say
Andrew D. Thompson, 20, decided it would be a fine idea not only to attend a party thrown by a 16-year-old girl but also steal from her dad, who happens to be Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bob Seger.
Thompson was arrested and charged Tuesday with stealing cash from Seger as well as a pair of sneakers that were autographed by Shaquille O'Neal. He also tried getting away with a Rolex, but it's unclear whether he was formally charged with a party foul. The Orchard Lake, Mich., police chief said Thompson admitted the theft, which took place last August.
Also apparently stolen the famous guitar Seger wore on the cover of his 1994 Greatest Hits album. You know the guitar, it's a sunburst orange Gibson Les Paul. Mysteriously, the guitar later turned up in the Seger family's backyard. Thompson denies stealing the guitar although Detective Darrell Betts said it turned up right after he questioned Thompson about the incident.
Betts also suggested Thompson broke into the back door after the small party had ended to steal the items.
It's hard not to wonder what Thompson was planning to do with the guitar. It's not every day a 20-year-old man shows up at home in the middle of the night with an expensive Les Paul, especially one that was on the cover of an album that has sold more than 9 million copies.
The same goes for Shaq's shoes, What was the next step? Was Thompson going to show up to the young Ms. Seger's phys ed class wearing a pair of size 23's? That sounds ridiculous, but when you wonder what the real point was it couldn't have been much better than that.
Thompson is being charged with larceny, punishable by up to four years in prison. If it gets that far, Thompson will have to ponder whether pocketing a Rolex was worth telling Detroit prisoners why he's locked up alongside them.
