A woman in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) was arrested after the body of a 3-month-old baby boy was found wrapped in plastic inside a freezer earlier this week.

Police made the discovery inside a home located along Church Street in Corowa Wednesday night following a request for a concern-for-welfare check, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

An unnamed 40-year-old woman, whose relation to the child was unclear, was arrested at the address and was taken to Albury police station on the same night, but she was later released, according to the Australian newspaper.

Police did not reveal if the woman will face charges in the future over the discovery.

A crime scene has since been established, with specialist forensic officers conducting an examination, NSW police said in a statement. They were seen removing a home freezer from the address, according to a report by 7News.com.au.

Authorities are set to conduct a postmortem examination on the deceased boy to determine his cause of death.

The investigation into the death is ongoing

Federation Council Mayor Patrick Bourke described the child's death as a "tragedy."

"Any time a child is lost, under any circumstances is a tragedy," Bourke said.

"Our thoughts go out to everyone affected, especially the family of the infant and our first responders," he added.

Mourners dropped off flowers and children's toys at the scene, which was home to the woman, her parents and the deceased child.

"It’s such a sad thing to happen to a defenseless little baby, but we don’t know the situation, so I can’t make [any] judgment," one neighbor said.

People who have any information regarding the incident are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or through their website.

In a similar story, a man in Louisiana was arrested last week after authorities found a dismembered and headless body of a woman in his freezer.

Benjamin Beale, 34, was booked on second-degree murder charges Friday in connection to the death of 36-year-old Julia Dardar.

Police initially found Dardar's torso in a freezer inside a bus parked in the backyard of Beale's home on Jan. 11 as part of an investigation into the mother-of-two's disappearance.

Dardar had previously moved in with Beale, according to the former's ex-husband, Micah Dardar.

Aside from finding Dardar's body parts wrapped in plastic, deputies also found what they said was a clandestine meth lab.

Beale has since been charged with obstruction of justice in a death investigation, illegally carrying a weapon in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, creating/operating clandestine drug lag, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and distribution of methamphetamine.
