'Body Dysmorphia Is A Real Thing': Marie Osmond Was Body Shamed As A Teen
Singer Marie Osmond opened up about how a producer called her "fat" when she was a teenager during the filming of her talk show, "Donny & Marie," which aired on the ABC network from January 1976 to May 1979.
"It was on that lot that I was taken out to the back by some head of the studio — and I'm like 5′ 5″ and about 103 pounds — and he basically said, 'You're an embarrassment to your family. You're fat,'" Osmond recalled during an interview with PageSix published Saturday.
The now 63-year-old singer also claimed that the producer told her, "250 people were going to lose their jobs because you can't keep food out of your fat face."
Following the harsh comments about her body, Osmond went on an extreme diet that made her lose 11 lbs, the singer shared, adding that the comments eventually developed body dysmorphia.
"I was in the dressing room, bending over putting on my pantyhose, and there was a girl in there changing who was just an emaciated skeleton with skin on her," she explained. "And I just thought, 'Oh my gosh, that's so sick,' and I stood up and realized that girl was me."
She continued, "And it was just one of those big 'AHA' [moments], that 'Oh, body dysmorphia is a real thing.'"
The singer credited her parents, Olive and George Osmond, with helping her gain confidence again. She said, "But I believe that the family I grew up in, my parents especially, were just amazing people. And that really helped me walk through some of those really tough years."
The singer disclosed last year that she wants Selena Gomez to portray her onscreen, whenever a biopic or a miniseries is made on her life.
"I think Selena Gomez would be amazing, only because she has been through a lot of the things that I've been through," she said. "I think it's nice to have a child's perspective as being an entertainer because it's very different."
Osmond was last seen in the role of Margaret in the 2021 romantic comedy movie, "A Fiancé for Christmas."
