Body Found In Fort Myers Was ‘Dumped’ In Wooded Area, Police Suspect
Police in Florida are investigating a homicide after a body was discovered in a wooded area in Fort Myers.
The body of a male was found on Monday morning by a couple on a walk with their dogs. During an afternoon media briefing, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno revealed the man’s body was discovered in a marshy, wooded area along Sophomore Lane.
“It appears he was killed somewhere other than this location and dumped at this location,” Marceno said. “This investigation is hours old.”
“It appears to be an isolated incident. It appears to be a male, unidentified right now .... could be 40s to 60s. Unknown who. Again, working on that identity," Marceno added.
The couple who made the discovery was walking their dogs when the animals began to smell something in the woods and eventually sniffed out the body.
“We walked down this road every morning with our dogs between 7 and 7:30, and this morning as we were walking along just noticed something off in the ditch that was pink, and then saw something kind of by it like a towel or a blanket, and then I looked and could tell it was a body,” the couple told a local outlet. “He had dark hair, no shirt. It looked like someone had dumped him is the impression I got."
The couple immediately called 911, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was later seen searching the area. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident marks the 13th homicide in Lee County this year. Marceno is asking anyone with information about the homicide to contact investigators or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
