KEY POINTS

  • "Assault on Dragon Keep" will be sold as a standalone game in the future
  • The game will be free to claim on the Epic Games Store until Nov. 16
  • "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" will serve as a follow-up to this DLC

One of the most popular DLC expansions for “Borderlands 2” is now available for free as a standalone game as part of the promotions for the upcoming “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.”

“Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep” is currently free on the Epic Games Store, PC Gamer reported. Players who claim this title before the promo period expires will be able to keep it on their accounts forever, and since it’s now playable as a standalone experience, owning “Borderlands 2” or any of the other DLCs is not required.

This DLC is the best way to get acquainted with both Tiny Tina and the wacky world of “Borderlands” in preparation for the upcoming “Wonderlands” game since it’s essentially a sequel to “Dragon Keep.”

While it retains the signature loot-and-shoot gameplay loop of “Borderlands 2,” the DLC coats the game with a fresh new perspective. Instead of expanding the Vault Hunters’ adventures on Pandora, “Dragon Keep” thrusts players into a “Dungeons and Dragons”-style table-top RPG hosted by Tiny Tina, the resident demolitions expert of their ragtag group of heroes.

Players will go on an adventure inside of the fantasy RPG world with Tina acting as the dungeon master, offering plenty of funny commentary as players watch the world warp according to her whims.

Apart from the wildly different setting, “Assault on Dragon Keep” is still a “Borderlands” game. There is plenty of loot to be had and enemies to be shot, but even these were given the medieval fantasy RPG treatment.

There are special grenades that shoot lightning bolts and rain down fire while dozens of bog-standard fantasy enemies like orcs, skeletons and dragons try to maul players as they try to save the queen from the clutches of the Handsome Sorcerer, a heavy-handed reference to the game’s actual antagonist, Handsome Jack.

Meanwhile, the upcoming “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” aims to expand upon this fantasy by introducing even crazier fantasy elements such as full-blown fantasy character classes, magic spells, expanded class abilities and more.

“Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep” will be available until Nov. 16. Players who fail to claim this within that time will still be able to purchase this title as a standalone game for a low price in the future.
