“The Borgias” star François Arnaud has come out as bisexual, revealing on social media that he hopes to combat the stigma associated with it.
On his Instagram Stories, Arnaud, best known for his role as Cesare Borgia in the racy Showtime drama, admitted to letting people simply assume that he was straight. But the 35-year-old actor has now decided to come out as he believes silence perpetuates the negative stereotypes surrounding bisexuality.
“Last week, I was chatting with work friends, and as I brought up a trip I’d taken with an ex-girlfriend, I asked myself — for the ten-thousandth time — how to tell such a story without making it seem like that was the whole story of me,” he began his series of messages on Sunday, Sept. 20.
“I’m sure many bisexual guys feel the same and end up doing as I did: letting other people’s assumptions of straightness stand uncorrected,” he continued.
Talking about the reason why many bisexuals continue to avoid disclosing their sexual orientation, Arnaud said that “stigmas of indecisiveness, infidelity, deception and trendiness are still clinging to bisexuality.”
Arnaud, whose announcement comes just days before Bi Visibility Day on Wednesday, Sept. 23, emphasized that he was not confused or ashamed about being bisexual.
“But I’ve always considered myself bisexual. Not confused or trying to look edgy. Not disloyal. Not ashamed. Not invisible. Happy #bivisibilityday this Wednesday,” he said.
In addition to his “The Borgias” character, Arnaud played a memorable guest-starring role on “Schitt’s Creek” as Sebastien Raine, the ex of Dan Levy's character David. He has also starred in “Midnight, Texas” and “I Killed My Mother.”
On the relationship front, Arnaud dated his “The Borgias” co-star Holliday Grainger from 2011 to 2012 and actress Evelyne Brochu for two years. He was linked to Sarah Gadon in 2014.
Meanwhile, fans have expressed support for the Canadian-born actor after he came out.
“I love François Arnaud’s statement about coming out as bisexual, especially for addressing the invisibility that most bisexual men live under,” one netizen tweeted.
“françois arnaud came out of bisexual which makes perfect sense bc no one straight can ever pull off leather pants like he did in the borgias. a big win for the bisexual community, baby!” another wrote on Twitter.
A third netizen posted, “So happy for Francois Arnaud that he can openly say who he is and be proud of that #loveislove.”
