Boring Company CEO Elon Musk Says Car Elevator For LA Tunnels Will Start Operating Next Week

Elon Musk’s plans for a network of tunnels for cars are rapidly moving. The Boring Company CEO recently tweeted a video of the elevator that will lower the cars into the tunnels, which will start operating next week.

“Just installed steel skeleton of the car/pod elevator. Should be operating next week,” Musk tweeted.

Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, tweeted a video of other tunnel developments.

The videos come after Musk announced Thursday that the company was digging tunnels under Los Angeles.

“No longer waiting for Godot. It has begun boring and just completed the first segment of tunnel in LA,” he tweeted. Musk named his boring machine Godot, after the Samuel Beckett play “Waiting for Godot,” back in May.

In April, the Boring Company uploaded a video of how the tunnels will work. The clip shows a vehicle riding onto a car skate, which then lowers itself underground into a network of tunnels. The car platform travels at 124 mph with the vehicle on top while other cars travel on other skates. When the video was released, the website for the Boring Company went live.

At the time, Musk said At TED2017 in Vancouver his team was trying to “dig a hole under L.A.” to "create the beginning of what will be a 3D network of tunnels to alleviate congestion.”

Musk said the tunnels should help people get “from Westwood to LAX in 5-6 minutes.” The platform on which vehicles will travel is being designed to achieve speeds of 130 mph, Musk said, adding there is no speed limit in the tunnels.

“Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won't fall on your head,” the Boring Company’s site said. “A large network of road tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew [just keep adding levels].”

Musk assures the public in the website’s FAQ that traveling through tunnels will be safe, especially if an earthquakes hits. The site said tunnels, when designed correctly, could be one of the safest places to be in case of a quake.

Elon Musk’s Tunnel Idea

Musk had previously told Bloomberg he planned to create a large underground network that would include 30 levels of tunnels for cars and high-speed trains, like the Hyperloop.

The Tesla CEO first introduced his tunnel plans in December when he tweeted: “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging.” In January, he held a Hyperloop competition outside SpaceX’ headquarters after introducing the concept of a few years before. At the same time Musk tweeted he was going to “start digging the tunnel tonight.” The next month, Musk revealed he was digging a “demo tunnel” in the SpaceX parking lot.
