  • The Boston Celtics have surprisingly enter the Kevin Durant sweepstakes
  • An NBA insider reveals that the trade proposition was not new after all
  • Donovan Mitchell is closer to getting traded than Kevin Durant at this point

The NBA landscape received a big shock recently when it was revealed that the Boston Celtics had silently thrown their hats in the ring in the seemingly never-ending Kevin Durant sweepstakes.

Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed that the Celtics offered Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and a future pick in exchange for Durant–a package that had the Brooklyn Nets asking to include Marcus Smart, a few more draft picks and possibly another rotation player to the mix.

According to Charania, the Celtics are not entirely prepared to bend to the Nets’ will, but “the franchise is mulling over next steps on how to approach discussions.”

However, the release of this potential trade apparently came at a much later date as per NBA insider Brian Windhorst.

Windhorst also opened up on the possibility of Durant being traded prior to the start of the season.

“Right now, the Nets' viewpoint is: If they can't get their price, they're going to ride out the storm... They could start the season with Durant or that could be a negotiating stance,” he stated.

Durant originally requested out of Brooklyn last June 30, and nearly a month later, there has been no report of a deal nearly coming to completion.

For comparison, Donovan Mitchell being linked to the New York Knicks and a deal happening is much closer than a Durant trade at this point.

If Windhorst is correct, it is interesting that details of a trade between the Celtics and Nets emerged now since it makes them one of the frontrunners for Durant’s services, alongside his preferred destination, the Phoenix Suns.

While the Durant saga marches forward, it still remains to be seen what happens next.
