Two teenage girls have been charged with murder following the death of the Uber Eats driver they assaulted and whose car flipped during their armed carjacking attempt.
The girls, aged 13 and 15, whose identities were not revealed, have been accused of attacking Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year-old Uber Eats driver, near Nationals Park on Tuesday, reported NBC4 Washington.
The gray sedan, which belonged to Anwar, crashed, causing it to flip onto its side as the two girls were carrying out the crime. An incident report that was released to the public Wednesday claimed the girls had used a stun gun on the driver.
Police found Anwar on the sidewalk when they arrived at the scene. He was brought to a nearby hospital, but he had suffered too much damage and so, could not survive.
Two National Guard troops that were in the proximity of the crash pulled the suspects out of the wrecked car. The girls did not get a chance to leave as the two of them were arrested at the scene.
Police charged the suspects with felony murder and carjacking and took them to the homicide branch of the Metropolitan Police Department to be processed. It was found that the 13-year-old girl is from Southeast D.C., while the 15-year-old girl is from Fort Washington.
The two girls appeared in juvenile court Wednesday. Their attorneys entered pleas of non-involvement and asked for the suspects to be released.
Anwar moved from Pakistan to the U.S. with his family in 2014, the New York Post said in a report. He is survived by a wife, three children, and four grandchildren. His family is feeling immeasurable grief over this loss.
A fundraising page has already been set up to raise funds for Anwar's Islamic funeral.
